Foot Surgery
Foot surgery is a sub-specialty of podiatry dealing with the treatment, diagnosis and prevention of foot disorders.
Conditions Treated
Some of the conditions treated by Dr. Mussett include bunions, toe problems, arthritis, diabetic feet, fungal nails, nail problems, heel spurs, warts, hammer toes, neuromas, foot & ankle fractures, tendon injuries and flat foot. These conditions can be treated using both surgical and non-surgical techniques.
The Treatment
There are many surgical and non-surgical options available to treat foot and ankle problems. Externally applied devices such as orthotics or braces may be inserted into shoes to modify functional or structural characteristics of the foot. It displaces regions of the foot to balance, comfort or therapeutically place them. Physical therapies that strengthen muscles may also alleviate the symptoms. Other non-surgical options include exercise, injections, physical therapy, and splinting.
When everything else fails, the last resort is to go for surgery. Surgeries are performed to remove bunions and other deformities of the foot. In case of inflammatory processes, fusion of joint spaces may be carried out.
The non-surgical techniques only act as a complement to surgical techniques helping in optimal recovery. To ensure a complete recovery, it is best that you schedule an appointment so your specific case is thoroughly examined and proper treatment is given.
Recovery
As in any surgical procedure, the recovery period for foot surgery is a crucial one. It depends mostly on the type of surgery had. However, recovery from foot surgery is a difficult one as it requires the patient to keep the dressing clean and intact. Getting the dressing wet or soiled may cause infection making the recovery difficult. People with diabetes or weak immune systems are also at a higher risk of getting infections.
